Tibet Collection started working with tailors from GuChuSum in 1991, just as their organization was getting started. Several tailors were invited to join a design and production workshop we were running in Dharamsala at the time.
Soon afterwards they asked us to sell some of the prayer flags they were printing for the local community. The flags were made in a traditional way by inking a carved woodblock and pressing the fabric against it with a yak hair pad.
We selected an array of prayer flag woodblocks to create a line of small, medium and large sizes and also commissioned the carving of other small woodblocks to make a simple lucky sign garland. These are the same blocks they still use to produce our flags nearly 20 years later.
I feel that our relationship with GuChuSum is special and am happy to able to help them grow.
